Utah Tunnel Tourism

http://www.thecoolhunter.net/ads

San Francisco’s Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) riders face an unexpected scene at the Montgomery Street Station. With a clever 3D illustration, the station’s tunnel is reborn as one of Utah’s scenic icons – the Delicate Arch in Arches National Park – Watch commuters experiencing the installation.

This ad is part of the Utah Office of Tourism’s (UOT) $2.2 million regional spring/summer Utah Life Elevated® campaign and it will stay in place till the end of June. It was created by UOT’s ad agency of the record for the past seven year, Salt Lake City-based Struck. The extensive regional campaign includes network TV commercials, digital outdoor, online display and social media promotion.

Struck executive creative director Steve Driggs explains that the forced-perspective feel of the tunnel installation started with a 3D illustrator scanning the entire tunnel in all of its dimensions, and continued with the scans being plotted based on GPS coordinates in a 3D architectural rendering program. The result does give experiential advertising a cool, new dimension. - Tuija Seipell

Black Friday may not save November sales

Despite improved traffic, the much-touted Black Friday weekend sales didn’t look like it would salvage November same-store sales for retailers. They surveyed more than 1,000 shoppers, besides store visits. While most stores were very crowded on Thanksgiving night/early Black Friday morning, it’s clear that sales volume is getting shifted with the pie not necessarily growing. Grom’s research showed that Black Friday weekend sales were flat versus last year, with Wal-Mart, Kohl’s and Macy’s the early winners while Target and J.C. Penney Co. were a bit disappointing.

Woman files class action lawsuit against Frito-Lay for marketing genetically-modified snacks as 'all natural'

Many major food manufacturers have been on a kick to jump on the "all natural" bandwagon, with all sorts of processed food products now claiming to be healthy and free of artificial and synthetic ingredients. However, one such company, Frito-Lay, is the subject of a new class action lawsuit that pegs the company for illegally marketing its snack products, which are loaded with genetically-modified (GM) ingredients, as being natural.

Represented by Milberg LLP of Los Angeles, Calif., Julie Gengo of Richmond, Calif., recently filed a class action lawsuit against Frito-Lay alleging that its snack products are fraudulently labeled. Frito-Lay Sun Chips and Tostitos products are made with GM vegetable oils and potentially even GM corn, but they are both labeled as being "All Natural." But GMOs are not all-natural ingredients, and are, in fact, admittedly synthetic, which makes any product that contains them unnatural.

Retail Sales Hurt by Hurricane

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/15/business/economy/retail-sales-hurt-by-hurricane.html?_r=0

Retail sales fell in the United States in October for the first time in three months as superstorm Sandy slammed the brakes on automobile purchases, suggesting a loss of momentum in spending early in the fourth quarter.
Sales dipped 0.3 percent, the Commerce Department said on Wednesday, after an upwardly revised 1.3 percent increase in September that was previously reported as a 1.1 percent rise.

Retail Sales in U.S. Decrease for First Time in 4 Months

October’s slowdown comes after the prior two months marked the best back-to-back retail sales showing since at least late 2010. Part of the jump in purchases during that period was the result of households snapping up Apple Inc.’s new iPhone 5. Support also came from car and light truck sales, which climbed in September to a 14.9 million pace, the fastest in more than four years. The main reason why all the sales dropped is because hurricane Sandy.

freddy's is hiring

Hi David-

I hope that things are going well for you and your students.  There is a lot of action is taking place across the street from your office and we are working diligently towards a December 4th opening to the public. Construction is going very well, however, we are not able to begin the interview process inside of the physical restaurant until Monday Nov 19th. That said, I have found another temporary office space to use for the week prior to the 19th. Beginning on Monday Nov 12th, we will be conducting interviews at an office located at 150 E 29th, Suite 154. It is located in the Palmer Gardens office building located in the SW corner of the intersection of 29th and Garfield. We will be in that office from Monday Nov 12th through Saturday Nov 17th between the hours of 10 am until 6 pm. Beginning Monday Nov 19th, we will be interviewing inside of the restaurant located at 3479 Mountain Lion Drive between the same hours of 10 am to 6 pm.

We would love to meet your students and discuss the possibility of employment with Freddy's.  I enjoy meeting motivated young people, and am confident that your students are just the candidates we are seeking.  These individuals are extremely valuable to our organization and the caliber of the candidate is very important.  We work hard to establish a very positive work environment in which all team members are valued and their contributions are rewarded.  I feel that this opportunity will be a great fit for many of your students.

I would be happy to drop off a flyer for your classroom describing the location and hours of our temporary employment office.  Please let me know if this is a possibility. Again, we look forward to meeting your students and to assembling the best hospitality team in town.

Thanks again for reaching out to us!

Talk soon,

Ryan Fitzpatrick threw into the end zone to the open man. Unfortunately for the Bills, that man was Patriots safety Devin McCourty.
That easy interception with 23 seconds left decided the game the way every other Buffalo game at Gillette Stadium has ended — with a New England victory.
On a day of dreadful defense by both teams, the Patriots held on for a 37-31 win over the surprisingly tough Bills on Sunday despite allowing 35 first downs, Buffalo's most ever and the most ever allowed by New England.

Were the Romney and Obama TV Ads a Total Waste?

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2012/11/09/were-the-romney-and-obama-tv-ads-a-total-waste.html

The approximate number spent on television advertising is $1 Billion in the concluded presidential campaign, the question is what, if any effect of these ads had on the outcome. The leading person seems to be that President Obama’s decision to define Governor Romney as a rich, out-of-touch elitist last summer helped carry him to victory. Of course, if Romney had won, the story would have been his genius to air ads late in the campaign and turn the election in his favor.

To Succeed in Sales, Suspend Your Self Interest

Top salespeople, the best of the best, understand that when it comes to selling, it isn’t about them or their product or service. It’s about the other person and how they benefit from it. Do not be a doormat, self-sacrificial, or a martyr in any way. But referring that customer to a competitor when their product is a better fit often builds long-term trust, because it’s clear you’re an honest broker. If you find yourself constantly referring clients to a colleague but don’t receive any referrals back, take a careful look at the situation. It’s fine if you don’t have anyone to refer, but I want to make sure it’s not a lack of confidence. But believing that good things will happen if you help others doesn’t mean you can slack off on the business end. Ultimately, the secret to sales is recognizing what you can control – and what you can’t.

teens with lesbians parents get better grades!

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/teens-better-students-lesbian-parents-study-article-1.1196995

Two teens hold up signs supporting their mothers during a gay rights rally in Los Angeles in 2009. A new study suggests that teens living with two moms tend to do better in school.

Teens with lesbian parents tend to do better in school and lead happier lives, a new study suggests.

Researchers found that 17-year-olds with two moms had high school GPA averages of A-minus to B-plus, according to the study, entitled “Adolescents with Lesbian Mothers Describe Their Own Lives.”

The teenagers also had strong family bonds and described their moms as good role models.

“These kids were planned and their lesbian mothers were very engaged in parenting,” Nanette Gartrell, lead researcher for the Williams Institute of UCLA study, told CBS Las Vegas.

Gartrell and her colleagues tracked 78 participants for a period of 26 years before publishing their results in the Journal of Homosexuality.

“At the end of high school, the teens tell us that they have excellent grades, feel connected to their families and friends, and admire their parents,” she added.

The researchers also found that the teens were comfortable telling friends that their parents are lesbian.

“They teach me to be accepting of all people on this earth, no matter what differences they may have,” wrote one of the 38 adolescent boys surveyed, according to the study.

Gartrell said she was pleased by the results.

“As a psychiatrist, I can say that these are the types of child-rearing outcomes that every parent hopes for,” she said.

Three reasons Obama will win; three reasons Romney will win

http://www.latimes.com/news/politics/la-pn-2012-presidential-election-obama-romney-20121106,0,7496153.story

Romney:
Economic performance: Yes, optimism is on the rise, but there’s no denying that a majority of Americans believes the country is headed in the wrong direction and doesn’t have confidence that Obama’s economic policies will fix it. With the economy as the issue that the great majority of voters consider their top priority, Republicans have argued that wavering voters in the end will come down on the challenger’s side. The most recent Pew Research Center survey showed Obama with a slight edge, but also showed that the number of voters who said they might yet change their minds was enough to switch the outcome

Obama:
Latinos: For at least a decade, Karl Rove and other Republican strategists have warned that the party risked failure if it could not find a way to reach out to the country’s fast-growing Latino population. Instead of doing so this year, Mitt Romney ran a primary campaign that stressed hard-line positions against illegal immigration. The goal was to outflank Texas Gov. Rick Perry, and it succeeded, but at high cost. (And ultimately, Perry did so poorly that he might have lost anyway.)

Consumer Spending Sees Slight Uptick as Incomes Climb

Consumer spending in the U.S. climbed more than forecast in September as incomes grew, a sign the biggest part of the economy was picking up as the quarter drew to a close.
Household purchases, which account for about 70% of the economy, rose 0.8%, the most since February, after a 0.5% gain the prior month, a Commerce Department report showed today in Washington. The median estimate in a Bloomberg News survey of 71 economists called for a 0.6% rise. Incomes rose 0.4%, the most since March.
The economy expanded at a 2% annual pace in the third quarter, helped by a pickup in household purchases as an improving housing market boosted confidence. At the same time, growth remains limited and unemployment elevated, Federal Reserve policy makers said last week, one reason they maintained their plan to buy bonds and keep interest rates low.

More than $1 billion in TV ads have carpet-bombed key states

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2012/nov/4/more-than-1-billion-in-tv-ads-have-carpet-bombed-k/
One million ads. More than $1 billion. Ten battleground states.
Those eye-popping figures tell the story of the 2012 presidential campaign TV ad blitz — never before has so much money been spent on so many commercials aimed at so few voters.
Television ads were the primary communications tool for the campaigns of President Obama and his Republican challenger Mitt Romney, despite the gradual but persistent shift of viewers from television to the Internet.
While both teams maintained a robust social media presence and used online ads for micro-targeting voters based on their reading and shopping habits, nothing came close to the campaigns’ investment in the kind of 30- and 60-second TV spots that have defined presidential campaigns for nearly half a century.
“Fewer people are witnessing the onslaught than ever before. The ones that are are getting carpet bombed,” Ms. Fowler said.
A newly empowered spate of independent groups helped contribute to the glut, investing millions in their own TV advertising to influence the 2012 contest.
A series of federal court rulings, including the landmark Citizens United Supreme Court decision in 2010, significantly eased campaign finance regulations, freeing corporations and wealthy individuals to spend money to influence politics.

Colorado 4-Year-Old Is Tired Of 'Bronco Bama' And Mitt Romney

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/31/colorado-4-year-old-is-ti_n_2048867.html
With less than one week to go before Election Day, it's safe to say that many Americans feel a bit of election fatigue. At the Al Smith dinner earlier this month, even President Barack Obama joked that "sometimes it feels like this race has gone on forever."
But out of the mouths of babes we often get the truth and, like so many of us, this Fort Collins 4-year-old is ready for this election season to end.
"I'm tired of Bronco Bama and Mitt Romney," A teary-eyed Abigael tells her mother in the video.
Evans told 9News that she and her daughter were listening to NPR when Abigael starting tearing up.
"That's why you're crying?" Elizabeth asks to which Abigael starts to cry and cough. "It'll be over soon, Abby. The election will be over soon, okay?"
Abigael then tries to get a hold of herself and responds to her mother with a tearful, "Okay."
Elizabeth Evans posted this video yesterday to her YouTube account after the young girl heard "one too many mentions of the election," Evans describes on her YouTube page.
Hang in there Abigael -- just a few more days, just a few more days.

Verizon's New Ad Campaign Is a Load of Half-Truths

Why is Verizon Wireless telling half-truths in its latest advertising campaign? It does make the company look better than its competitors, but here's the problem: When customers realize what they're led to believe is only a half truth, they will be very upset with Verizon. Verizon is not lying. Still, it is telling only half the truth, and the result leads customers to believe something that isn't true. Verizon is trying to make customers think it offers better and faster service. In fact, if customers knew the whole truth, Verizon's ads would have no selling power. Instead, they would hurt Verizon because they would destroy the trust the company has built over the years. Customers want speed. They don't care how a carrier provides it. Different networks can use different technologies to achieve the same goal. Customers don't think one is better than the other. Customers don't really care what a technology is called. They want performance -- and Verizon is not the only carrier to offer performance. From the customer's perspective, what really matters is which network offers the fastest service where you spend the most time. The bottom line is, if the network you use has been updated where you spend time, you will have the highest speed. If not, you won't. Period.

Hurricane Sandy Cost Advertisers An Estimated $500 Million

An analyst at media research firm Pivotal Research Group gave Ad Age estimates of Sandy's monetary toll on the advertising industry. According to Ad Age, senior research analyst Brian Wieser "estimated Sandy will cost the advertising industry about $500 million in lost revenue, due to interruptions in local TV and radio programming and also factoring in decision-making by media buyers in the wake of the storm."

After at least five years as the top earner for a 30-second spot in prime time TV, FOX's "American Idol" cedes its number-one position this season to NBC's "Sunday Night Football," according to Advertising Age's annual ranking of prime-time television ad rates. It's been a steady ascent for the challenger, with the two programs sharing the number-one spot in last year's ranking

Politicians hurt the economy to help the economy...

The avalanche of advertising that comes with the political season will end soon, followed by a period of uncertainty. That is a key finding of the latest STRATA quarterly survey of leading advertising agencies. While TV stations are seeing an influx of spending by agencies, 47% of media buyers polled say their clients are waiting until after the elections to advertise in order to avoid competing with political buys. The finding suggests advertisers are concerned about future costs.
The latest findings demonstrate a significant shift from the second quarter when a majority of agencies polled were willing to compete with political advertisers, and only 18% said they would wait to advertise until after the elections.
