Behind Mercedes' Super Bowl ad strategy

http://espn.go.com/blog/playbook/dollars/post/_/id/2596/why-mercedes-is-advertising-during-the-super-bowl-with-kate-upton

Despite the high price of advertising time and the high product price point, car brands are finding it worthwhile to advertise in the Super Bowl.

Last year, Honda and Acura spent some big money, not only buying the ads, but using Matthew Broderick and Jerry Seinfeld to attract greater attention.

That car brands think the Super Bowl is worth it isn't all that interesting. What is? The fact that many car brands are trying to accomplish the same thing: lowering the age of their consumer.

Earlier this month, I wrote about how Lincoln would be using the Super Bowl to completely overhaul its brand, which at 60 had the highest average for a car buyer in the industry.

To reach younger car buyers and get people to switch to its brand, Lincoln will roll out a stylish sedan called the Lincoln MKZ, at a low luxury entry point of $36,000.

Now Mercedes-Benz is joining them in the game, unveiling its new CLA, a compact sedan that, at around $30,000, will be the lowest-priced Mercedes on the market.

While Mercedes doesn't quite share Lincoln's issue -- the company has been working on getting younger since 2007 -- over the past couple years, the brand has seen its average buyer age go from 49 to 52

Anticipated Ford Mustang to be 2014 1/2 model

Promotional Tie-Ins

Restaurants and grocery stores can tie their promotional activities directly into their advertising campaigns. An ad in a magazine, for example, may include a coupon that readers can clip out and bring to stores for a discount. Television and radio ads can include a promotional code or phrase listeners can use to receive a discount or promotional food item in a store. Online ads can be especially effective when they include printable coupons or coupon codes.

NASA CONFIRMS THE END OF THE WORLD

With an alien invasion in 2012!

The most unappealing outcomes would arise if the aliens from Planet Zeeba caused harm to humanity.  While aliens may arrive to eat, enslave or attack us, the report adds that people might also suffer from being physically crushed or by contracting diseases carried by the visitors. In especially unfortunate incidents, humanity could be wiped out when a more advanced civilisation accidentally unleashes an unfriendly artificial intelligence, or performs a catastrophic physics experiment that renders a portion of the galaxy uninhabitable.
To bolster humanity’s chances of survival, the researchers call for caution in sending signals into space and to send Alien Search Teams across the planet – to peacefully attempt to connect with the aliens.

Why Rethinking Closing Techniques will Increase Sales

http://www.business2community.com/sales-management/why-rethinking-closing-techniques-will-increase-sales-0360293

The purpose of any closing technique is to get your customer to say ‘yes’.
In selling, this means the process used to bring your customer to a decision, whether that be yes or no. Closing sales is becoming increasingly difficult as customers are now savvier and more assertive than ever before.
In other words, they aren’t as daft as you think. With the help of comparison websites and celebrity customer service ‘Gurus’, consumers know they can source cheaper alternatives to your product/services at the click of a button.
There are six commonly recognised types of closing techniques:
  • The Confirmation Close
  • The Conditional Close
  • The Indirect Close
  • The Direct Close
  • The Assumptive Close
  • The Alternative Close
Although successful in certain situations, not all of these closing techniques will help you close a sale or get your customer to sign onthe dotted line.

Retail sales a mixed bag as Christmas gets closer

Retail business for local stores was a mixed bag this week, with only a few days left to shop before Christmas.
Nationally, analysts are dialing down expectations for the biggest shopping season of the year, and big chain stores are offering extended hours and bigger discounts in an effort to draw shoppers into their doors in the days leading up to Christmas.

But Padgett doesn't put students in the back seat of his car, nor does he issue tickets or report students to the court system. In fact, Padgett said surprise house calls, like this one, are rare, and reserved for those kids with severe, ongoing truancy problems — or "the chronic cases."

Online Meets Offline

Set up your social media with memorable vanity links so when you share them offline, customers can find you easily. This way, when you put your Facebook symbol in your ad, customers can find you easily on Facebook (or Twitter or Foursquare, etc). Getting a vanity URL on Facebook is easy. You request a vanity URL and, unless someone is already using that name, it’s yours. It’s a good idea to claim your vanity URL even if you’re not ready to launch your Facebook page yet — so someone else doesn’t claim it first.

Utah Tunnel Tourism

http://www.thecoolhunter.net/ads

San Francisco’s Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) riders face an unexpected scene at the Montgomery Street Station. With a clever 3D illustration, the station’s tunnel is reborn as one of Utah’s scenic icons – the Delicate Arch in Arches National Park – Watch commuters experiencing the installation.

This ad is part of the Utah Office of Tourism’s (UOT) $2.2 million regional spring/summer Utah Life Elevated® campaign and it will stay in place till the end of June. It was created by UOT’s ad agency of the record for the past seven year, Salt Lake City-based Struck. The extensive regional campaign includes network TV commercials, digital outdoor, online display and social media promotion.

Struck executive creative director Steve Driggs explains that the forced-perspective feel of the tunnel installation started with a 3D illustrator scanning the entire tunnel in all of its dimensions, and continued with the scans being plotted based on GPS coordinates in a 3D architectural rendering program. The result does give experiential advertising a cool, new dimension. - Tuija Seipell

Black Friday may not save November sales

Despite improved traffic, the much-touted Black Friday weekend sales didn’t look like it would salvage November same-store sales for retailers. They surveyed more than 1,000 shoppers, besides store visits. While most stores were very crowded on Thanksgiving night/early Black Friday morning, it’s clear that sales volume is getting shifted with the pie not necessarily growing. Grom’s research showed that Black Friday weekend sales were flat versus last year, with Wal-Mart, Kohl’s and Macy’s the early winners while Target and J.C. Penney Co. were a bit disappointing.

Woman files class action lawsuit against Frito-Lay for marketing genetically-modified snacks as 'all natural'

Many major food manufacturers have been on a kick to jump on the "all natural" bandwagon, with all sorts of processed food products now claiming to be healthy and free of artificial and synthetic ingredients. However, one such company, Frito-Lay, is the subject of a new class action lawsuit that pegs the company for illegally marketing its snack products, which are loaded with genetically-modified (GM) ingredients, as being natural.

Represented by Milberg LLP of Los Angeles, Calif., Julie Gengo of Richmond, Calif., recently filed a class action lawsuit against Frito-Lay alleging that its snack products are fraudulently labeled. Frito-Lay Sun Chips and Tostitos products are made with GM vegetable oils and potentially even GM corn, but they are both labeled as being "All Natural." But GMOs are not all-natural ingredients, and are, in fact, admittedly synthetic, which makes any product that contains them unnatural.

Retail Sales Hurt by Hurricane

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/15/business/economy/retail-sales-hurt-by-hurricane.html?_r=0

Retail sales fell in the United States in October for the first time in three months as superstorm Sandy slammed the brakes on automobile purchases, suggesting a loss of momentum in spending early in the fourth quarter.
Sales dipped 0.3 percent, the Commerce Department said on Wednesday, after an upwardly revised 1.3 percent increase in September that was previously reported as a 1.1 percent rise.

Retail Sales in U.S. Decrease for First Time in 4 Months

October’s slowdown comes after the prior two months marked the best back-to-back retail sales showing since at least late 2010. Part of the jump in purchases during that period was the result of households snapping up Apple Inc.’s new iPhone 5. Support also came from car and light truck sales, which climbed in September to a 14.9 million pace, the fastest in more than four years. The main reason why all the sales dropped is because hurricane Sandy.

freddy's is hiring

Hi David-

I hope that things are going well for you and your students.  There is a lot of action is taking place across the street from your office and we are working diligently towards a December 4th opening to the public. Construction is going very well, however, we are not able to begin the interview process inside of the physical restaurant until Monday Nov 19th. That said, I have found another temporary office space to use for the week prior to the 19th. Beginning on Monday Nov 12th, we will be conducting interviews at an office located at 150 E 29th, Suite 154. It is located in the Palmer Gardens office building located in the SW corner of the intersection of 29th and Garfield. We will be in that office from Monday Nov 12th through Saturday Nov 17th between the hours of 10 am until 6 pm. Beginning Monday Nov 19th, we will be interviewing inside of the restaurant located at 3479 Mountain Lion Drive between the same hours of 10 am to 6 pm.

We would love to meet your students and discuss the possibility of employment with Freddy's.  I enjoy meeting motivated young people, and am confident that your students are just the candidates we are seeking.  These individuals are extremely valuable to our organization and the caliber of the candidate is very important.  We work hard to establish a very positive work environment in which all team members are valued and their contributions are rewarded.  I feel that this opportunity will be a great fit for many of your students.

I would be happy to drop off a flyer for your classroom describing the location and hours of our temporary employment office.  Please let me know if this is a possibility. Again, we look forward to meeting your students and to assembling the best hospitality team in town.

Thanks again for reaching out to us!

Talk soon,

Mark Siffring

New England Patriots survive late scare from Buffalo Bills, hang on for 37-31 win

Ryan Fitzpatrick threw into the end zone to the open man. Unfortunately for the Bills, that man was Patriots safety Devin McCourty.
That easy interception with 23 seconds left decided the game the way every other Buffalo game at Gillette Stadium has ended — with a New England victory.
On a day of dreadful defense by both teams, the Patriots held on for a 37-31 win over the surprisingly tough Bills on Sunday despite allowing 35 first downs, Buffalo's most ever and the most ever allowed by New England.

Were the Romney and Obama TV Ads a Total Waste?

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2012/11/09/were-the-romney-and-obama-tv-ads-a-total-waste.html

The approximate number spent on television advertising is $1 Billion in the concluded presidential campaign, the question is what, if any effect of these ads had on the outcome. The leading person seems to be that President Obama’s decision to define Governor Romney as a rich, out-of-touch elitist last summer helped carry him to victory. Of course, if Romney had won, the story would have been his genius to air ads late in the campaign and turn the election in his favor.

http://adage.com/article/special-report-super-bowl/century-21-return-super-bowl-helping/238244/

Real-estate concern Century 21 is returning to the Super Bowl in 2013 for a second go-round on the marketing roster of the Big Game, according to the Realogy unit's chief marketing officer.

Century 21 expects to air a 30-second spot early in the third quarter, just a little past the end of the halftime show, said Beverly Thorne, Century 21's CMO. The company plans to soon start discussing creative concepts with its agency, Red Tettemer of Philadelphia, she said. As part of its deal with CBS, which is broadcasting the event in 2013, Century 21 will also be a presenting sponsor of part of the network's pre-game broadcast and have its ads run throughout the day.

To Succeed in Sales, Suspend Your Self-Interest

selling stuff isn't about the salesperson, the items being sold or the store. its about the buyer.  to get them to want to buy you need them to feel like they are holding all your attention and that what they want is in your personal interest

Built-in advertising: The Windows 8 feature you haven't heard about

Windows 8 has been one of the most anticipated and talked about tech launches of 2012. Discussions intensified as the operating system neared and for the most part, everything went off swimmingly for Redmond. Sure there was the post-RTM update ahead of Microsoft’s October 26 release date but there’s something else with Windows 8 that most aren’t yet aware of: built-in advertising.

To Succeed in Sales, Suspend Your Self Interest

Top salespeople, the best of the best, understand that when it comes to selling, it isn’t about them or their product or service. It’s about the other person and how they benefit from it. Do not be a doormat, self-sacrificial, or a martyr in any way. But referring that customer to a competitor when their product is a better fit often builds long-term trust, because it’s clear you’re an honest broker. If you find yourself constantly referring clients to a colleague but don’t receive any referrals back, take a careful look at the situation. It’s fine if you don’t have anyone to refer, but I want to make sure it’s not a lack of confidence. But believing that good things will happen if you help others doesn’t mean you can slack off on the business end. Ultimately, the secret to sales is recognizing what you can control – and what you can’t.

40% chance of owning an Iphone if you're a teen.

It’s no secret that Apple’s gadgets are popular amongst today’s youth, but I can’t help but be impressed when I see hard numbers demonstrating just how much reach Apple has with the teenage demographic. According to Piper-Jaffray’s semi-annual survey of 7,700 teenagers here in the US, a whopping 40% of participants reported iPhone ownership. What’s more, an even larger 62% checked off the box stating that their next smartphone will be Apple-made, compared to just 22% of respondents anticipating an Android purchase in near future
