Sanity Restored to NFL

Oh, Grow Up! Scion Veers To Older Target With New Campaign

After years of marketing itself to just about the youngest driving demographic possible, Toyota's Scion brand today will announce a new campaign -- a mea culpa of sorts that its advertising might have actually aimed too young in the past, just as the brand is now starting to show signs of life after years of declining sales.

Facebook Launches 'Gifts' in Crafty Data Play

Facebook is looking to tap into a new revenue stream of forgetful friends by launching a service that is integrated with birthday reminders.

Rolling out starting today in the U.S., Facebook Gifts will be integrated with birthday reminders so that users will see notifications urging them to give gifts to people with upcoming birthdays, and users will also be able to send gifts from their friends' timeline pages. It works by first letting the buyers browse through the selection of gifts (currently a hodgepodge including $35 cupcake orders from Magnolia Bakery and a $5 Starbucks gift card). Once they've made a selection, the recipients get an alert and provide a shipping address.

Then the buyer enters credit card information to make the payment.
Ka-ching! Facebook gets a credit card number, a street address and a host of other identifying information it currently doesn't have about its users.

The jury is still out on who will be creating Go Daddy's Super Bowl XLVII ads.

Recently, Business Insider was told that Go Daddy's 2013 Super Bowl campaign would be handled by Deutsch New York. It turns out, the agreement between Deutsch and Go Daddy is not yet a done deal.
In an email to Business Insider, Go Daddy explained that they are "very happy with Deutsch NY and the work they did with the 'Inside / Out' campaign this summer, but we just have not yet decided who will produce our Super Bowl spots."

Savage Flap NY Subway ads

The agency that oversees the city's public transit system, stung by a court decision that forced it to run an ad implying that enemies of Israel are "savages," says it will continue to allow political advertisements on subways and buses but will require them to carry disclaimers.
Under a policy adopted Thursday by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority board, ads expressing political, religious or moral viewpoints will have to include legends cautioning that the views being expressed aren't necessarily endorsed by the MTA. The disclaimers also will carry the names of the people or groups sponsoring the advertisements.

Referees’ return is emotional…and controversy-free for Ravens, Browns

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/early-lead/wp/2012/09/28/referees-return-is-emotional-and-controversy-free-for-ravens-browns/

The NFL’s regular referees — the real refs — returned Thursday night, working the Cleveland Browns‘ game against the Baltimore Ravens in M & T Bank Stadium and, for a few moments, the scene was surreal.
They were greeted with a standing ovation and cheers. There were none of the “manure” chants that marred the nationally-telecast game from Baltimore on Sunday. Players and coaches greeted referee Gene Steratore and his crew warmly. “Good evening, men. It’s good to be back,” Stenatore told players and, with that, everything went back to normal. The game flowed smoothly with an evident sense of control and confidence that these guys were 99.9 percent sure what to do in every situation. Not that they’re perfect, but over three weeks, the contrast and just what they had brought to the game became apparent, culminating in the Monday night debacle.

Ford's Bold New Social Media Strategy Has Inherent Risks

http://www.businessinsider.com/fords-social-media-strategy-2012-9

At Business Insider's Social Media ROI Conference yesterday, Ford's head of global digital communications director Scott Monty talked about his company's approach to social media.

For the most part, at large companies social media is run out of communications and marketing departments, possibly extending to customer service.
Monty said that Ford's social media plan in coming years will be to move beyond that. "Our priority really is to start taking social across the entire enterprise, not just the usual departments ... to help anybody in the company embrace social."

Will NFL's Referee Antics Chase Away Advertisers? Doubtful

    http://www.forbes.com/sites/dalebuss/2012/09/25/will-nfls-referee-antics-chase-away-advertisers-doubtful/

The powers that be in the National Football League — team owners and Commissioner Roger Goodell — certainly aren’t sweating it in public.
But to the extent that the rising national outcry over rotten officiating by substitute referees may be making some of them itch under their collars at this point, there’s only one reason for their growing discomfort.
And it has nothing to do with upset fans, blanket condemnation by sports literati, or even the fact that ESPN actually is taking some shots at the sport that it has done so much to promote over the years.
If NFL leadership bargains with the union of permanent referees a little more urgently this week, it will only be because they fear that advertisers might start withdrawing some support of the sterling brand that professional football has established in the marketing community. There simply is no better advertising vehicle available in America these days.
And that’s why advertisers aren’t going anywhere.

Volkswagen - first TV spot in the "Why VW" campaign

You know what's really freaking cute? Laughing babies. You know what's also cute? Laughing old people. You know what's not quite as cute, but still pretty heartwarming? Laughing anyone. And that's exactly what Volkswagen and Deutsch LA are giving us in this first TV spot in the "Why VW" campaign, appropriately titled "Smiles. The 30-second commercial shows snippets of "real people"—in order of age, from babies to kids to adults to seniors—laughing uncontrollably, with nary a car in sight. The spot's end line, "It's not the miles, it's how you live them," pushes a consumer-over-product message.

Beyond the 30 Second Spot: Marketers Adding Alternatives to Television Advertising

A new survey, released today by the Association of National Advertisers (ANA) and Forrester Research, Inc. (Nasdaq: FORR), found that 78% of advertisers feel that traditional television advertising has become less effective in the past two years. The survey also found that marketers are exploring emerging technologies to help bolster their television advertising spend.

    - Almost 70% of advertisers think that DVRs and video-on-demand will reduce or destroy the effectiveness of traditional 30-second commercials.

    - When DVRs spread to 30 million homes, close to 60% of advertisers say that they will spend less on conventional TV advertising; of those, 24% will cut their TV budgets by at least 25%.

    - While 55% say that their top executives are closely watching changes in TV advertising, most advertisers have not experimented with advertising on DVRs (49%) or video-on-demand (44%).

    - Eighty percent of advertisers will spend more of their advertising budget on Web advertising and 68% of advertisers will look to search engine marketing.

    - Advertisers are also looking at alternatives to traditional TV advertising and will spend more of their advertising budgets on: branded entertainment within TV programs (61%); TV program sponsorships (55%); interactive advertising during TV programs (48%); online video ads (45%); and product placement (44%).

    - Ninety-seven percent of advertisers agree that the TV industry will need new audience metrics - other than reach and frequency - to report commercial ratings, not just program ratings to effectively measure TV advertising.

For the future, and for you, we had to completely recreate the 911. The result: no fewer than 90% of all 911 components are either new or have been fundamentally revised. This is our approach to the preservation of tradition. Precisely how we do justice to the legend of the 911.

Michael Bay Crashing the Super Bowl With Doritos One winner will work on 'Transformers 4'

    http://www.adweek.com/adfreak/michael-bay-crashing-super-bowl-doritos-143955

Michael Bay, unquestionably the greatest cinematic genius of all time, is teaming up with Doritos, which makes a damn fine chip, for the seventh-annual installment of the brand's "Crash the Super Bowl" contest for consumer-generated ads. A pair of winning spots—one selected by Doritos (Bay is a judge) and another by an online poll—will air during the Feb. 3 broadcast. The creator of the spot that scores higher on the USA Today Ad Meter ranking will be invited to work with Bay on Transformers 4, although Megan Fox won't be in this one, which, to my way of thinking, makes the prize considerably less enticing. (There's an additional $1 million prize if one of the ads finishes at No. 1 on the Ad Meter, which is hardly out of the question, based on past results.) Look for this year's slate of amateur auteurs to put Bay-inspired spins on the usual themes. For example, just imagine how much better last year's big winners, "Man's Best Friend" and "Sling Baby," would've been if the infant and dog had transformed and exploded

Target exactly the audience you want
With the prevalence of social media in today’s world, there are countless places to market your business. Before throwing money at the various channels, you need to look at your business’ specific circumstances to find where your best ROI will come from. Are you a startup in a crowded space? Try using very targeted Facebook ads and promoted tweets to reach customers that aren’t already being engaged by your bigger competitors.

Yes, you are being bombarded by political ads

It is all in the name! This season politicians are cracking out the ads at break-neck paces for what seems to be the closest race since little Bush's 2nd term! But, and this may surprise you, but Iowa is getting the brunt of the action...yeah, Iowa. Surprised me too. But it seems that for the past six months, the Romney and Obama campaigns have been bombarding the swing state with countless ads deeming it the most important next to Colorado and Nebraska.

    umbrella rig

    http://www.bigfishtackle.com/fishing_articles/Fishing_Tackle_Reviews/Freshwater_Fishing_Tackle_Reviews/New_YUMbrella_Multi-Lure_Rigs_1238.html

Multi-lure rigs exploded during a time of year when baitfish were of substantial size, and through the winter and very early spring anglers caught big largemouth, smallmouth, striped bass and other fish on rigs with 3 ½- to 6-inch swimbaits. Then the spawns came and these bigger offerings often went untouched. Some anglers used it as proof that multi-lure rigs were just what they thought they were – flashes in the pan – gimmicks that already went out of style.

Then a few smaller multi-lure rig versions appeared, and a few anglers gave them a shot, often using smaller 3- and 4-inch grubs instead of the bigger-bodied swimbaits. The results show the learning curve of these rigs is continuing to evolve. These smaller versions with more petite caught plenty of fish, and in fact still are right now.

    Online Ads Get Personal

Political advertising is taking over television airwaves in battleground states, but complementary online advertising is also ubiquitous and being used by campaigns more than ever before.
Presidential campaigns, especially President Barack Obama's, have been at the forefront of digital political advertising. But this cycle, Congressional campaigns are catching up, using their Internet pitches not only as a fundraising tool, but as a key component of their strategy to target voting blocs
"There's two sides to the story," said Peter Pasi, a Republican digital strategist and executive vice president at Emotive. "Are campaigns reaching out more, are they really recognizing the value of online advertising? Or are the companies that sell advertising reaching out more? I think it's both."

The 5 Most Important Elements of a Holiday Social Media Strategy

    http://www.clickz.com/clickz/column/2206111/the-5-most-important-elements-of-a-holiday-social-media-strategy

    Title explains all.

    The 5 Elements are:

    1. Promotion: rich posts across social networks.
    2. Engagement: experiences that drive amplification and consideration.
    3. Amplification: build momentum cross social networks.
    4. Conversion: collect valuable data and social purchase intent
    5. Analysis: measure and optimize.

Keep this formula in mind as you plan your holiday campaigns and get ready for the most exciting social marketing season yet.

Bonding with Batman can make you stronger.

It was hard to keep track of all the superheroes hitting the big screen this summer: Batman in "The Dark Knight Rises." Iron Man, The Hulk, Captain America and Thor in "The Avengers." Peter Parker in "The Amazing Spider-Man."
And each character seemed to have bulked up for their latest comeback.
"Over the last few decades, superheroes' bodies have become extremely muscular with body dimensions that are impossible for most men to attain," write the authors of a new study that analyzes the effects of superheroes on male body image.
Past research has shown that seeing muscular figures can make men feel badly about their own bodies, similar to the way seeing stick-thin supermodels can make women question their weight.
But the same effect may not hold true for our favorite comic book characters.
The study, published this week in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, suggests watching superheroes can actually increase males' self esteem - and might make mere mortals stronger.

    The study
Researchers with the University at Buffalo asked 98 undergraduate males to rate how much they liked and/or were familiar with Batman or Spider-Man on a scale of 1 to 5. Participants who scored a 4 or higher were said to have a "parasocial" relationship with the superhero - i.e. a one-sided psychological bond. Those who rated less than 2.5 were put into a control group.
All participants were then shown a photo of either a scrawny or buff-looking Batman/Spider-Man. They were given one minute to look at the photo and then asked to rate their mood, self-esteem and body esteem (how they perceive their muscular strength, biceps, etc.)
The undergrads were then tested with a hand-held dynamometer to assess their physical strength.

    The results
Participants who had a strong parasocial bond and were shown a muscular superhero photo recorded higher body esteem than those who didn't have a bond with the character.
On the flip side, participants who weren't familiar with the character who were shown a muscular photo experienced a lower body esteem than participants who were shown a scrawny superhero.
More surprising were the strength test results. The undergrads with a parasocial bond who were shown a muscular superhero were stronger than those in the control group and stronger than those with a parasocial bond who were shown a non-muscular photo.

    The takeaway
"The thing that I find most interesting ... is the idea that these media figures have real psychological effects on the self," says study author Ariana Young, a doctoral candidate in psychology at the University at Buffalo. "It’s not just mind-numbing entertainment. The bonds that we form –- and we do form real bonds - they affect how we feel about ourselves. And it’s not always in a bad way."
Young is planning another superhero study this semester where she'll analyze the effects of the characters on acts of heroism, or helpful behavior

    Political Ads Sharpen Message

Romney has completely canceled his advertising campaign in Michigan, his home state, in favor of "swing states" such as  Florida, Ohio, Virginia, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, Iowa, Colorado, and Nevada. No one is sure where the money will be transferred to exactly, but wherever it goes, there will be a lot of it.  Kantar projects that third quarter U.S. ad spending will get a short-term boost from the Summer Olympics and political advertising "but sustained long-term improvement will probably be linked to the health of consumer spending on the goods and services that marketers provide." But as BtoB Magazine notes, brands such as Dow Chemical, IBM, SAP and Siemens are "scaling back" on TV advertising in the U.S. until after the elections.

    Guantanamo Bay: a butterfly paradise?

Guantanamo Bay is best known worldwide for its controversial detainment and interrogation facility of the U.S. military, located within the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, Cuba.
The site is also a butterfly paradise, scientists have determined, with habitat supporting many species of both butterflies and moths.
"The most fascinating species we encountered was the Antillean flasher Astraptes xagua, seen [above] feeding on the plant Melochia tomentosa," project leader Deborah Matthews Lott told Discovery News.
"These large black and iridescent blue skipper butterflies are only found in Cuba and Andros Island, Bahamas," she added. "We observed adults nectaring and identified adult food plants."
James Toomey, a volunteer with the Florida Museum of Natural History on the University of Florida campus, collected moths at the site. He attracted them to a sheet illuminated with mercury vapor lamps at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Station.
The species of moths and butterflies that he and his colleagues found are described in a paper published in the latest Bulletin of the Allyn Museum.
The study is helping scientists to better understand how different plant and animal species have spread throughout the Caribbean. Such information can be tied to climate change, co-author Jacqueline Miller explained to Discovery News.
Miller and her team are noticing a lot of changes, not only in the Caribbean, but also in places like northern Mexico. That data, coupled with differences in weather patterns, "indicate that something is happening and species are trying to adapt to these changes," Miller said.
"The Cuban Peacock (Anartia chrysopelea) is an example of a Cuban endemic species that is an occasional stray to southern Florida," Matthews Lott said.
"Long-term monitoring of butterfly populations in the Caribbean helps us understand which species have the potential to colonize and become established in new areas, versus those species which remain isolated for long periods of time, or establish temporary populations which eventually die out," he added.
"The bella moth (Utethesia ornatrix) is a common and particularly noticeable moth on the Naval Base," Matthews Lott said. "These brightly colored moths with variably patterned pink, black and white wings are active day and night."
As for what the social atmosphere was like for the researchers, they did not comment on security measures.
Instead, they were struck by some of the family aspects of the base, since young students in grades K-12 are also housed with their families who are stationed there. "These students and their teachers are very eager to learn about natural history and the unique environment they live in," Matthews Lott said.
Even the caterpillar of the bella moth creates a striking sight as it feeds.
Butterflies and moths, both members of the order Lepidoptera, represent just a fraction of the many insects, birds and animals that call Guantanamo Bay home.
The Naval Base is also home to the bee hummingbird, which is the smallest bird in the world. On the other side of the size spectrum, the base has huge Cuban boas.
"While working at the site in January, we frequently encountered the Cuban rock iguana and the hutia, or banana rat," Matthews Lott said. "The latter is extremely common on the base, but rare off base where it has been hunted as a human food source."
The Naval Base has a surprisingly desert-like habitat, due to a rain shadow effect from the surrounding mountains.
The land has unintentionally become a wildlife refuge, according to the researchers. That's because large areas have remained undeveloped and public access is restricted.
"People are not trampling, bulldozing or developing the land," co-author Roger Portell said. "So there is a large area of land in the southeast corner of the island that has been basically untouched for 100 years."
Butterflies themselves are not always good news. The invasive lime swallowtail Papilo demoleus "is of special concern to the citrus industry as it continues to spread through the Antilles and approaches Florida," Matthews Lott said.
The lime swallowtail can be a terrorist to citrus growers, given that it likes to feed on citrus trees. This particular specimen was collected at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Station in January.

There were 16 offenses in all.

    Customer knowledge makes the sale

    Customer knowledge makes the sale
Selling solutions to customers' problems, it seems, is no longer enough. Customers today, especially B2B buyers, are determining what solutions are best for their specific need, and then looking for companies that can provide them. Increasingly rare is the occasion when a salesperson encounters a prospect at the beginning of the sales cycle. In fact, the sales cycle itself is evolving to a customer-led buy cycle. More and more, customers do their homework on what they need to meet a goal or solve a problem, contacting potential providers once they've created their own short list.
The Internet, of course, has and continues to play an integral role in this evolution

The company, which has been a league sponsor since 1995, played up the Super Bowl in the campaigns it introduced each of the last two Septembers. The new campaign, which is to begin on Sunday, includes the Super Bowl, but it is not the main focus. Rather, the spotlight in the 2012-13 campaign is on offers for fans that range from discounts on video games to a chance to interview an N.F.L. player.

    The Hashtag Election

The 2012 party conventions were a kind of coming-out party for Twitter as a political advertising platform.

At good $60,000 dollars was spent on an online campaign from the Republican party attempting to sell themselves via Twitter using the Hashtag "#Forward2012"

Peter Greenberger, who heads Twitter's Washington sales office, saw the trend coming from a long way off. "The Republican primary debates, with spin room occurring in real time," offered the first hint that the platform was poised for a breakout in the 2012 election cycle, he said.

"We want our message to float in front of that audience. It's really powerful for us," a Republican representative says.

Ridiculous political ads are here to stay

When it comes to those dreaded political ads, my colleagues who teach advertising want the public to know: They don’t condone this sort of stuff. And they don’t like it any better than the rest of us. Today’s two zingers aimed at women are cases in point. All is fair game for politics

The game of politics is hardly recognized as a fair sport to play; as observers we accept this. But lately it seems as if team red and team blue may be stretching the rules of campaigning a bit more than usual when it comes to fact checking in advertising. It’s strange though—neither opponent minds much of the rule breaking
Although this Democratic ad—cleverly named “Understands” on Youtube—is lacking coverage of timely details, the core of it is true. Bain Capital did sell GST Steel, which as a result laid off more than 700 workers who lost their health insurance, severance and pension benefits.
Despite the media and public’s concern about the truth in politics, both campaigns remain unabashed by their own advertising techniques. Perhaps every politician’s motto is, “An eye-for-an-eye.”

August retail sales should help cure jobs hangover

The August jobs report this past Friday could be taken as a sign that the economy is close to slipping back into a recession. But many economists argue that this is oversimplified and point to expectations for this week’s retail sales report to stem the concern. They say that retail sales should actually look pretty good. They said spending was up by .7%. Even auto sales have risen despite the growing gas prices. They don’t think the economy is falling, though the labor market appears to be in worse shape than companies appear to be.

Update on hackers leaking Apple I.D's

“The FBI is aware of published reports alleging that an FBI laptop was compromised and private data regarding Apple UDIDs was exposed," a spokeswoman told FoxNews.com. "At this time, there is no evidence indicating that an FBI laptop was compromised or that the FBI either sought or obtained this data.”
The group has released a link to a database of more than 1 million unique identification numbers for Apple devices, which could include iPhones and iPads. AntiSec said the data is just a piece of the more than 12 million unique identification numbers and personal information on the device owners that it got from a laptop used by an FBI agent.
The FBI denied that it ever had that information. But officials there said they could not verify the validity of the data that AntiSec released. Federal officials also warned that computer users should be careful when clicking on such links because they sometimes may contain malware that can infect computers.
Joe Stewart, a security researcher with Atlanta-based Dell SecureWorks, said, however, that he tested the link and did not find any connection to malware.
Apple did not respond to repeated requests for comment Tuesday.
Apple assigns unique device identification numbers (UDIDs) -- a string of numbers and letters -- to all of its devices. The numbers let iTunes and application developers know which device is running which apps. As an example, the numbers allow game developers to keep track of users' high scores.
Besides the identification numbers, the information posted by AntiSec has the name that a person chooses to name their device and a description of whether the device is an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.
If linked with other information such as a name or address, the numbers could be used as a way to get at other more sensitive data. But knowing the number doesn't enable the FBI to track or eavesdrop on people.
Earlier this year, FBI agents arrested several hackers tied to the group, and in the process revealed that LulzSec's reputed leader, known as Sabu, was an FBI informant.
Law enforcement officials said that linking the Apple data theft to an FBI agent may have been done, in part, as retribution for the arrests.

    Politicians and negative advertisement

"The only good thing about negative advertising is that it is extremely effective." says the author of this article, Al Coddington, discussing the effectivness of negative advertising.

A viewer of this website submitted a question asking who he should vote for seeing as how both sides are portrayed as negative people due to political adds. But, in truth, Al suggests that most politicians are stand=up guys with nothing but the best intentions. Running for political office is a very high-stress campaign and to win you must do what works even if that means being negative, which Al says are the most effective type of adds, usually being the most swaying to voters.

And yes, the first game of football in seven months was something to be excited about, as the Dallas Cowboys sought to dethrone the New York Giants at the beginning of their Super Bowl title defense, a task that traditionally starts off well for most champions.

As the entire tech community anxiously waits for what my be the anoccuncment of the new iPhone in the coming days, another mobile device is drawing new interest: Amazon's Kindle. As of this writing, Amazon hasn't asked for the commercials to be removed from YouTube, so it would be reasonable to assume that this early "leak" was strategic rather than an inadvertent blunder of some sort. Furthermore, opting to launch its new tablet just days before Apple's new announcement illustrates Amazon's newfound confidence in its hardware offerings and competitive position in the market.
