Mars rover examines rock close up

The robot pushed its arms against a rock to find out what elements it was made out of.

The rock - named "Jake Matijevic" after a former rover engineer - was not expected to have high research value.

Instead, it gave scientists an early chance to demonstrate the performance of the arm's "hand lens" and X-ray spectrometer
